Description
Evenley Hall is a country house, now serving as a children's home, built around 1740 for Francis Bassett and remodeled after a fire in 1897. The building features limestone ashlar, is partly rendered, and has an artificial stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic and basement, comprising five bays. The three central bays project beneath a pediment, supported by Ionic half columns on the first floor. There is a central stone porch from the late 19th century, which has a segmental pediment and Ionic half columns framing the entrance. The double doors are decorated with panelling and an overlight. The ground floor windows have moulded stone frames, while the first-floor windows feature alternating triangular and segmental pediments, all fitted with 19th-century plate glass sashes. A round window is set in the pediment above. The roof is hipped, and the lower flanking wings, which are from the 18th and 19th centuries, are set back from the main block. These wings are two storeys tall, with four bays, sash windows, and flat keystoned heads. At the rear, there are two three-quarter circular towers, each two storeys high with an attic, flanking a central Venetian window. The ground floor has 19th-century extensions. The interior was remodeled in 1897 in the Jacobean style.
