Description
The Church of St George is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1864 and 1865 by architect Henry Woodyer. It is built from squared coursed limestone and features an artificial stone slate roof, with wood shingles on the spire. Designed in the early English style, the church includes a chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, transepts, a south porch, and a west tower topped with a broach spire.
Inside, the church boasts elaborate decorative carving and aisle windows with detached shafts. Original fittings include a stone pulpit and font, as well as marble and alabaster reredes featuring an angel figure. There is a notable wall monument to Sir Creswell Levinz, who died in 1700, attributed to John Nost, which includes an over life-size marble statue of him in judges' robes and wig. Another wall monument commemorates H-Glynne Brown, who died in 1803, created by R. Blore junior, depicting a relief of a mourning woman by an urn. The church was built as a memorial for Mrs P.S. Pierrepoint of Evenley Hall in honor of her husband.
