Description
This is a dovecote located approximately 160 metres northeast of Newton Field Centre, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone, laid in tight courses and pointed up to about 1 metre above ground level, with the upper part tail-bedded. The roof is made of Collyweston stone slate, featuring gable copings with miniature gables at the ends and tips, and a central coping decorated with Tresham trefoils. There are two timber-framed hipped louvres at the ridge. The dovecote has quoins and low entrances on the left and right sides, both round-headed and chamfered. The right-hand entrance retains a heavy double-rebated door with a large lock, still in place on strap hinges. The left-hand entrance was inside the dovecote until recently but has been burnt, leaving only scattered iron fragments from the lock and hinge. There are also two rectangular chamfered openings at a high level. A central tablet reads "MAURICE TRESHAM." Inside, the dovecote contains thousands of L-shaped nesting boxes arranged in two separate lofty chambers. This dovecote is an outstanding example, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
