Description
A group of eight almshouses, later increased to twelve in the mid-19th century and now reduced to six, located in Islington. The date 1756 appears on a datestone, with further extensions added in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar with Collyweston slate roofs. Originally designed with single-unit plans, the structure is primarily single-storey with an attic. The front facade features an eight-window range of 20th-century casement windows set within original openings, each topped with stone lintels and keyblocks. Six-panel doors are positioned between the window ranges, also under similar stone lintels. Dormer windows, with hipped roofs, are visible along the eaves. Ashlar details include a prominent plinth and ashlar stacks at the ridge. The central range was extended in the mid-19th century with two-window additions on either end, matching the original style and including central six-panel doors with glazed toplights. A central plaque reads: "This hospital was erected and endowed for the support of eight poor persons by Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Pickering, eldest daughter of the late Sir Gilbert Pickering Bart. Anno Domini 1756.” A plaque to the far left reads: "This building an asylum for two Bedeswomen was erected AD MDCCCLVII by donation of the late T. Coales Esq.". A plaque on the far right reads: "This building, an asylum for two Bedesmen was erected AD MDCCCLXIII". The interiors of the 18th-century range retain features such as stop-chamfered spine beams and some two-panelled doors.
