Description
38, 38A, 38B, and 38C on Cambridge Street is a house that has been converted into shops and offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and is constructed of squared coursed ironstone with a plain-tile roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys with an attic. The road-facing elevation features five sash windows with segmental arch heads and keyblocks, three of which have glazing bars. At the ground floor, there are late 19th-century shop fronts. The building is adorned with a moulded stone cornice at both the front and rear, along with ashlar gable parapets that have kneelers. There are brick stacks at the ends of the building. The rear side includes two three-light casement windows with wooden mullions and transoms, set under stone lintels with keyblocks. Additionally, there is a two-storey, canted stone bay window and a porch from the 19th century. Inside, there is a small mid-18th-century staircase featuring two turned balusters per tread, along with some six-panelled doors and panelled window reveals.
