Description
This building, known as W.D. Wharton, is a house and shop constructed in 1886. It is made of brick and has a slate roof. The structure features a single-unit shop with living space above, spanning three storeys and comprising a two-window range. The ground floor has a 19th-century wooden shop front that has been modified in the 20th century. On the first floor, there are large wooden bay windows with curved sides, central arch head lights, and cast iron railings above. The second floor includes a pair of three-light windows set in half dormers, each topped with moulded stone pediments. The building also has moulded stone string courses and a cornice, with brick stacks at either end. The plaster panels in the pediments display the date and the inscription, "This is the house that Jack built." This building was originally built for J. Wallis, the landlord of the nearby Hind Hotel, and is included for its group value.
