Description
20-22 West Street is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is built of regularly coursed lias stone with a limestone plinth and has a slate roof. The original design features a three-unit plan and the building has two storeys with an attic. The front has a three-window arrangement of casements with glazing bars beneath wooden lintels, although the ground floor windows are from the 20th century. To the right of the centre, there is a 19th-century panelled door with glazed top lights under a wooden lintel, and to the far left, there is a 19th-century shop window and part-glazed door that now forms part of the house. The building has gable parapets, kneelers, and brick stacks at the ridge and ends. There are 19th-century extensions at the rear. Inside, the room on the far left features an open fireplace with a bressumer and a salt cupboard. The first floor has plank doors with original ironmongery, and there are two dogleg stairs leading to the attics. The original roof structure is still intact.
