Description

No. 28, West Street is a house, originally dating back to the 16th century with alterations in the 18th century and 20th centuries. It is now used as a house and surgery. The building is constructed from roughly laid lias rubble with an asbestos tile roof. It began as a hall house and now appears as a two-storey, five-window range with irregularly spaced 20th-century casement windows, some set within the original window openings. An early wooden lintel is visible on the first floor to the left and on the ground floor in the centre of the building. A 20th-century door is located to the left of the centre. The gables have ashlar parapets and kneelers, with a carved face on the left gable. A brick stack is situated at the end of the building. A shallow, corbelled projection with some ashlar quoins is present on the left gable. A matching wing attached to the rear was originally separate cottages. Internally, the house features chamfered and moulded raised cruck framing and some original stud frame walls. A central cross wall with evidence of smoke staining is believed to be the original smoke screen. The roof structure is said to incorporate wind braces.
