Description
27 to 31 Main Street is a row of five houses built between 1860 and 1864 for Lady Overstone. The houses are constructed of regularly coursed lias stone with brick dressings and slate roofs. Each house originally had a two-unit plan and they stand two storeys high. The row features an eight-window range, consisting of one- and two-light wood-mullioned windows with cast-iron lozenge glazing bars, all set under flat brick arches with brick dressings.
Between the window ranges are gabled porches that contain 19th and 20th-century doors and arched openings; the porches for numbers 28 and 29 form a central pair. The gabled projection of number 31 stands out at the right-hand corner of the row, featuring a square bay window on the ground floor and a three-light wood-mullioned window above. The gables are adorned with barge boards and have slit windows at the apex. The houses have oversailing eaves and brick stacks at the ridge. The interiors have not been inspected.
