Description

The Old School House and Village Hall is a building that was originally constructed as a school and master's house between 1860 and 1864 for Lady Overstone. It features rusticated lias stone with ashlar dressings and a plain-tile roof adorned with fishscale banding. The building has a T-shaped plan, with the master's house on the right side having two storeys, while the school is a single storey.

The elevation facing the road shows the master's house with a projecting gable that includes a one-window range of wood-mullioned windows framed in ashlar. To the left, the school has a three-window range of single-light casements with cast-iron lozenge glazing bars, all set under an open loggia supported by a triple arcade of octagonal wooden columns. Above, there are two large ashlar gabled dormers featuring triple lancet windows.

A gabled porch is located to the right of the center, which has a 19th-century plank door with a moulded stone surround and a four-centred arch head. To the left of the porch, there is a single-light window and a slit window above, both with ashlar surrounds. The building is further enhanced by ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, lateral stone stacks, and a bellcote with a spirelet at the ridge.

On the east gable of the school, there is a four-light window with intersecting tracery and a slit window in the apex. The master's house also features a gabled porch to the right. Under the loggia, there are two tablets with inscriptions: one commemorates the construction of the school house by Lady Overstone, while the other honors Thomas Arthur Dickson, a former school manager, and is dated 1927. The interior has not been inspected.
