Description

The Manor House is a manor house that likely dates from the mid 16th century to the late 17th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a Weldon slate roof. The building originally had a three-unit plan with a central porch and is two storeys high with an attic, presenting a three-window range. The central bay projects forward as a three-storey gabled porch with an arched door opening. The door is a studded plank design with a square-headed moulded stone surround. There are two 2-light stone mullion windows in the porch, separated by moulded string courses, and flanking the porch are 4-light stone mullion windows. The gable ends have ashlar parapets with kneelers and finial blocks at the porch, along with two hipped roof dormers. Large ashlar stacks with moulded cornices are symmetrically placed at the ridge and ends of the house. A blank diamond-shaped tablet is located in the gable of the porch.

To the right, a 17th-century gabled wing projects forward, featuring 3- and 4-light stone mullion windows on each floor, along with a plank door in the return wall. The rear of the house includes a staircase projection from the late 17th or early 18th century. Inside, there are open fireplaces with bressumers and 17th-century fireplaces with moulded stone surrounds. A late 17th or early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a turned balustrade leads to the first-floor landing. The interior also features plank doors with stop-chamfered surrounds. The Manor House was originally part of the Kirby Hall estate and has had a long unbroken tenancy, followed by ownership within the same family.
