Description
The Collyweston War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by Henry Francis Traylen. It is made of stone and is situated in the churchyard to the south of St Andrew’s Church.
The memorial takes the form of an ornate churchyard cross, featuring a trefoil shape at each arm joint. The square shaft has two grooves running down each side and is supported by a low square plinth, which rests on an octagonal base set in a paved area. This area is surrounded by a kerb that has been partly removed on the west side.
On the west face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads, ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF COLLYWESTON WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918’. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the north and south faces. The east face features the inscription ‘1939-1945 GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN’, followed by the names of those who fell in the Second World War.
