Description

The Engine and The Hermitage are two dwellings located on Collyweston High Street, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with restoration in the 20th century. They are constructed from squared coursed limestone and feature a Collyweston slate roof. Originally, each dwelling likely had a two-unit plan, together forming an L-shaped range. The buildings are single storey with attics and include a continuous window range.

There are two canted bay windows with 20th-century casements on either side of the centre, both topped with Collyweston slate roofs. To the left and right of each bay window are 20th-century single-light casements under wooden lintels. Additionally, there are 19th and 20th-century casements under flood lintels at the far left and right, one 19th-century casement under the eaves to the left, and four gabled eaves dormers in the attic, three of which are from the 20th century.

The central part of the range has a 20th-century door with a 19th-century wooden porch, while there is another 20th-century door and porch to the left. The right gable features an ashlar parapet, and there are stone and ashlar stacks at the ridge. The bay at the far right is likely a 18th-century addition, and there are 19th-century lean-to extensions at the rear. The left elevation of The Hermitage has been partially reconstructed in the 20th century.

Inside The Engine, there is an ovolo moulded spine beam and an open fireplace with a similarly moulded bressumer in the central room. The room to the left also has an open fireplace with a bressumer and a timber stud wall. The interior of The Hermitage retains remnants of an entry that once provided access to the rear, located at the junction between the two properties. At one time, The Engine was used as a public house. The buildings are included for their group value.
