Description
The Main Building of Glapthorn Road Hospital was originally constructed as a workhouse in 1836, possibly designed by G. G. Scott. It features a late classical style with red brick additions made in 1902. The structure consists of two long parallel ranges connected by a central passage. The lower front range includes end pavilions and a central section that is two storeys high, linked by one-storey sections. The central hipped section projects forward and has two windows on the ground floor with rusticated heads, along with a door. The first floor has three windows. The side ranges are one storey high with six windows, and the bays are divided by plain pilasters. Each end pavilion has one window per storey, with end pilasters and a band between the storeys, all set on a plinth.
At the rear, there is a three-storey range featuring a central octagonal tower that rises to four storeys. The ends of this range and the rear extension, which were altered in 1902, are constructed of red brick. The tower has one window on each face, except for the centre, which features a clock in a roundel flanked by two windows. A wooden louvred bell turret crowns the tower. Both wings of the building have two windows at the ends, which project slightly, followed by five additional windows. The ranges are connected by a two-storey linking section that has undergone some alterations. The Main Building and the Hospital Chapel together form a cohesive group.
