Description

Winford Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, located on the west side of Station Road, Nassington. Originally a two-unit through-passage plan, it is now single-storied with an attic. The exterior is constructed of squared coursed limestone, now painted, and has a thatched roof. The front has a three-window arrangement at ground floor, featuring 19th-century casement windows under wooden lintels. A central window originally served as a doorway and is flanked by crude buttresses. Two eyebrow dormers are visible, with leaded casements and some earlier glass. A small, triangular stair window is positioned above the doorway on the right-hand side. A plank door with a glazed panel, also under a wooden lintel, is located on the far left. Brick and stone stacks rise from the ridge and end of the building. Inside, the room to the right of the entrance has an open fireplace with a bressumer and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The through-passage runs behind the stack. During the 19th century, the house was divided into two dwellings and a portion was used as a dame school.
