Description

The kitchen garden walls and attached summerhouse, located approximately 170 meters west of Deene Hall, are likely from the late 16th century for the Seventh Earl of Cardigan, with the summerhouse dating to the 19th century. The walls are made of red brick with burnt headers and feature battered brick and soldier course coping. They enclose an irregular triangular area divided into four separate sections by similar walls, each connected by arched openings. Some sections of the walls have been rebuilt, likely during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The attached summerhouse is an octagonal, castellated turret with two storeys. Its southeast and west-facing elevations have two-light mullion windows with arch-headed lights, and there is a similar doorway at the ground floor. The flat roof is probably made of lead, and an octagonal castellated stair turret is attached to the rear. The garden layout is depicted on 17th and 18th-century estate maps. A wall to the south was removed to create a bowling green. The Third Earl of Cardigan consulted the artist van de Meulen regarding the garden layout in the early 18th century. The gardens of Deene Park are recognized as Grade II in the Historic England Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England.
