Description
This is a row of five houses located at 22-26 Main Street, built between 1860 and 1864 for Lady Overstone, with extensions added in the 20th century. The houses are constructed from regularly coursed lias stone with brick dressings and feature slate roofs. Originally, each house had a two-unit plan and they are two storeys tall. The row presents an eight-window range, featuring one- and two-light wood-mullioned windows that have cast-iron lozenge glazing bars, all set under flat brick arches with brick dressings.
There are gabled porches between the window ranges, which have 20th-century doors and arched openings. The porches for Nos. 24 and 25 form a central pair, with a 20th-century lean-to to the left. The gabled projection of No. 22 stands out at the left corner of the row, featuring a square bay window on the ground floor and a three-light wood-mullioned window above. The gables are adorned with barge boards and have slit windows in the apex. The eaves overhang and there are brick stacks at the ridge. The interiors of the houses have not been inspected.
