Description
Corner Cottage and Pear Tree are a pair of cottages built between 1900 and 1901 by William Huckvale for Charles Rothschild. They are constructed from coursed rubblestone and feature a hipped thatch roof with a stone central ridge and end stacks, which include ashlar linked double and triple flues. Designed in the Vernacular Revival style, the cottages are two storeys high, with the roof in the center sloping down to first floor level. The building has a three-window range, with 3-light leaded stone mullioned windows on either side of a central dormer that contains a paired 2-light window. On the ground floor, there is a similar 4-light window with a hoodmould on either side of a recessed central section that includes additional windows and doors. The roof on the ends of the cottages also slopes down to first floor level. This pair is part of a significant group of model estate buildings in Ashton, built by Charles Rothschild.
