Description
The Glapthorn War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Leonard’s Church, which is also listed at Grade II*. The memorial features a medieval-style limestone cross that stands approximately 3.5 meters tall. It has a small wheel-head and a tapering shaft, set on a square plinth. This plinth is placed on a two-stage square base with chamfered corners, and the entire structure rests on a concrete base.
On the front of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF GLAPTHORNE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND 1914-1918." Additionally, the front of the top stage of the base is carved with the words: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS ST JOHN XV 13." Thirteen names are inscribed on the side of the plinth and the top stage of the base, facing the path through the churchyard.
At the rear of the base, there is an inscription that notes the memorial was constructed by R Cox, who appears to have been from Market Harborough, although this part of the inscription is damaged.
