Description

A watermill and attached house, with origins dating back to the medieval period, but largely rebuilt in the 17th century and further altered through the 19th century. The buildings are constructed of regular coursed and squared coursed limestone, with Collyweston slate and corrugated asbestos roofs.

The mill house is of a two-unit plan, with two storeys and an attic, and has a two-window front. It features irregularly spaced sash and casement windows with glazing bars, set under wooden lintels. A moulded stone surround frames the second-floor window on the left, while evidence of stone surrounds exists to blocked openings on the right. The eaves are at different levels, and a hipped eaves dormer with a casement window is located on the right, with brick and stone stacks at the ends. A three-window range attached to the right connects the house to the mill buildings. This section, spanning five bays, has a four-window front with irregularly spaced 19th century cast iron windows within shallow brick arches. A portion of the upper storey, far to the right, is constructed of brick. A mill race passes under the building to the right of centre.

The rear of the house displays two windows with moulded stone surrounds on the right, and a 20th century two-storey extension with a porch to the left. The mill building attached to the left also incorporates 19th century cast iron windows similar to those at the front.

The interior of the house contains remains of an open fireplace with a bressumer. The interior of the mill buildings was not inspected. Historically, there was originally a religious house at Perio, dedicated to St. John and St. Martin, first mentioned in 1282. The mill operated as a paper mill in the 18th century and as a corn mill during the 19th and 20th centuries.
