Description

The building known as the Barn adjoining Number 4 is located on the south side of East Road and consists of two distinct houses. The first house, dating from the early 18th century, is a low two-storey structure built of coursed rubble with a fairly steep stone slate roof and a flat verge on the west gable. It features a prominent stone chimney stack at the top, a hipped dormer towards the west end, and a central doorway with a small flat hood supported by two consoles. The door has incised panels and is topped by a rectangular fanlight with four tones. To the right of the entrance is a tall sash window that appears to rise to the eaves. Above the entrance, there is a small sash window in a wooden case with a wooden lintel. On the left side, there are three blind windows on the ground floor, and on the first floor, there is one window similar to the one above the doorway, which is slightly larger. To the left of this window is another blind window, and to the right, there is another with only a small opening at the top.

The second house is a much taller two-storey building with a parapet that screens the roof. It has a large front with few openings, featuring a central entrance with a moulded architrave and a panelled frieze above. It also has a small flat hood on two consoles and fielded panels on the reveals, soffit, and door. The house has five windows, three of which are blocked on the first floor, and two on the ground floor, with at least one also blocked. The windows have flat arched heads and glazing bars, and the facade is heavily covered with creeper. In front of the building is a small walled garden. Adjoining the west end of the second house is a two-storey barn with a pantile roof, which has one opening and a carriage doorway. The house's fenestration is partly obscured by the creeper.

Together, Nos 2 to 6 (even) and the barn adjoining No 4 form a group with No 21 St Osyths Lane.
