Description
The Barn, with adjoining gateway, is a house that was formerly a barn, dating from the 17th to early 18th century. It was converted and partially rebuilt around 1975. The structure is built of flint and brick, with some timber studding and brick infill in the upper walls of the left bay, along with a 20th-century extension to the right. The roof is half-hipped and covered with old tiles, featuring a 20th-century brick chimney between the left bays. The barn consists of four aisled bays, with a slightly later aisleless bay to the left and a small L-plan range of outbuildings, raised in the 20th century, set back to the right. It is one storey and has an attic.
The southeast front has 20th-century paired leaded casements in gabled dormers for bays two and three, and a hipped roof projection in bay four over a former cart entry, now fitted with a 20th-century four-light leaded casement. The rear features similar casements, with four in gabled dormers, French doors in bays one and four, and a 20th-century door in bay two. Inside, the barn retains its timber frame, with heavy diagonal braces supporting the tie beams and aisle plates, as well as raking queen post trusses. The left bay has queen strut trusses.
The adjoining gateway, attached to the right, was built in 1928 and is made of narrow red and vitreous brick. It features a chamfered semi-circular arch, flanking pilasters with moulded capitals, a frieze and moulded cornice, and a shaped parapet with two oeils-de-boeuf.
