Description

Dovecote House, located at Swallowfield Park, is a barn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century and 19th century, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The building features a timber frame with weatherboard, some brick infill, and brick sections. It has an old tile roof that is gabled and half hipped. The structure is L-shaped, comprising five framed bays by four, and it has one and two storeys.

Most of the windows are 20th-century casements with horizontal glazing bars, although there are some sashes with large panes. The entrance front includes a prominent six-light window that projects from the wall, topped with a small tiled pent roof and a brick cill. To the left, there are two bays with casement windows; the ground floor windows have segmental brick arches. There is a six-panelled entrance door to the left of these windows, framed with a moulded architrave and topped with a flat moulded hood. On the far right, there is a projecting lean-to with a small casement window on the return wall.

On the south front, the roof slopes down to a low level over the former aisles. There is a recessed verandah on the left featuring three sashes in architrave frames. A gabled wagon entry includes a large four-light window set in a weatherboarded surround, with a small window and a garden door to the right of the gable. Much of the internal frame is exposed, showcasing queen post trusses and straight braces.
