Description
Abbey Cottages comprise a group of six estate cottages arranged in an L-shaped block, dating to approximately 1898-1900. They were designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield and Medmenham Abbey. The cottages are constructed with a lower storey of dressed chalk, featuring windows with ovolo-moulded chalk mullions. The upper storey is roughcast and whitewashed, supported by a wooden bressumer, partially jettied on curved wooden brackets, with wood mullion windows. The roofs are finished with plain tiles, and the buildings are distinguished by elaborately cusped wooden bargeboards and finials, along with brick chimneys incorporating 'V' pilasters and off-set heads. The overall design is picturesquely asymmetrical.
The cottages are one storey and attic in height. The irregular ground floor has casements, and the attic is accessed via gabled dormers, all with leaded glazing. The doors are board and stud, set within moulded and stopped chalk surrounds featuring 4-centred arches and carved spandrels.
The west wing has four bays, incorporating a gabled bay to the right and a lower projecting gable to the left, with an external stack at the right end. The rear of this wing exhibits an "M" shaped gable with two upper-story, five-light canted oriels. The longer north wing, consisting of seven bays, features a projecting gable with an oriel window to the right and a shallow two-storey chalk porch projection in the third bay, complete with a coped gable, moulded kneelers, and an enlarged first-floor window. The rear of this wing has a lower eaves line and raking dormers. Cottage number 3 retains its original board door and flanking two-light casements; the remainder of the rear elevations have 20th-century extensions.
