Description
The premises of A J Axe and Sons is a 17th-century timber-framed house located on the southeast side of High Street in Chalfont St Giles. The building has two storeys and is designed in an L shape. The street-facing front was refronted in the late 19th century and features three gables, with the middle gable being smaller and adorned with decorative bargeboards. On the first floor, there are oriel windows, and a shop entry is positioned between the two right-hand bays. The doorcase is from the early 19th century and includes a bracketed and pedimented hood. There are carriage doors on the left-hand bay, and a large 17th-century brick stack is situated on the left side of the building. The rear range displays timber-framing on the east elevation, while the rest is finished in painted brick or render. The south gable shows evidence of framing on the west elevation of the wing, and the building is topped with old tile roofs.
