Description

A pair of semi-detached estate cottages dating to circa 1900, likely designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield. The lower storey is built of red brick in English bond, featuring a dentil string course above the doors, and battered buttresses flank the front. The upper storey is rendered and colourwashed, topped with a half-hipped plain tile roof. A central brick chimney has an off-set cap.

The cottages are one storey and attic, with two bays each. The ground floor windows are 4-light casements with wooden glazing bars and leaded top-lights, having chamfered and off-set brick sills and stop-chamfered wooden lintels. The upper storey contains later 20th-century 3-light leaded casements set within gabled dormers, which are ornamented with richly carved and cusped bargeboards. The front doors are original, set within moulded brick surrounds, and are topped with semi-circular brick arches. Above these arches are painted terracotta tympana, made of local Medmenham ware; No. 1 depicts the gathering of firewood (representing January), and No. 2 shows a shepherd and his sheep (representing February). The doors retain their original brass handles and numbers. These cottages were originally part of a group of twelve.
