Description
9 and 10 Westfield Cottages are a pair of semi-detached estate cottages built around 1900, likely designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield. The lower storey is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a dentil string arched over the doors, with battered buttresses on either side of the front. The upper storey is rendered and colourwashed, topped with a half-hipped plain tile roof and a central brick chimney that has an offset cap. The cottages are one storey with an attic and consist of two bays.
On the ground floor, there are 4-light barred wooden casements with leaded top-lights, chamfered and offset brick sills, and stop-chamfered wooden lintels. The attic features 3-light barred wooden casements set in gabled dormers, which are adorned with richly carved and cusped bargeboards. There are board doors on the left and right, each framed with moulded brick surrounds and semi-circular brick arches above painted terracotta tympana made from local Medmenham ware. The tympana depict the labours of the months September and October, with No. 9 illustrating the apple harvest and No. 10 showing milking. The doors retain their original brass handles and numbers. These cottages are part of a larger set of 12.
