Description
5 and 6 Westfield Cottages are a pair of semi-detached estate cottages built around 1900, likely designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield. The lower storey is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring a dentil string above the doors and battered buttresses on either side of the front. The upper storey is rendered and colourwashed, topped with a half-hipped plain tile roof and a central brick chimney with an offset cap. The cottages are one storey with an attic and consist of two bays.
On the ground floor, there are 4-light barred wooden casements with leaded top-lights, chamfered and offset brick sills, and stop-chamfered wooden lintels. The attic features 3-light barred wooden casements in gabled dormers, adorned with richly carved and cusped bargeboards. There are board doors on the left and right, framed by moulded brick surrounds and semi-circular brick arches above painted terracotta tympana made from local Medmenham ware. The tympana depict the labours of the months of May and June, with No. 5 illustrating yoked horses harrowing and No. 6 showing the corn harvest. The doors retain their original brass handles and numbers. These cottages are part of a set of 12.
