Description

A pair of semi-detached estate cottages dating to around 1900, likely designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield. The lower storey is of red brick in English bond, with a dentil string course above the doors, and battered buttresses flank the front. The upper storey is rendered and colourwashed, and the roof is half-hipped with plain tiles. A central brick chimney incorporates an off-set cap.

The cottages are one storey and attic, with two bays. The ground floor has four-light wooden casement windows, with the right-hand window retaining leaded top-lights. Chamfered and off-set brick sills are present, along with stop-chamfered wooden lintels. The attic has three-light casement windows within gabled dormers, featuring richly carved and cusped bargeboards. The left attic window retains wooden glazing bars, while the right has later 20th-century plain glazing. Original board doors are located on each side, set within moulded brick surrounds and semi-circular brick arches. The arches are topped with painted terracotta tympana made from local Medmenham ware, depicting the labours of the months March (threshing with a flail) and April (sowing) respectively, on numbers 3 and 4. The doors retain their original brass handles and numbers. These cottages form part of a larger group of twelve.
