Description
Thieve's Kitchen is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 18th century and an extension added later. The building is timber-framed, with the rear elevation exposed and featuring plastered or painted brick infill. The front elevation is clad in rubble or render, both of which are colourwashed, while the south elevation is constructed of witchert. The roof is thatched and hipped to the south, with two bays; the north bay has a slightly lower slate roof and includes a lean-to extension. The house has two storeys with an attic, and features leaded casement windows, some from the 18th century and others modern. The street-facing front has three windows on the ground floor and a central window on the first floor. The gable elevation includes two ground floor casements, one first floor window, and an off-centre stack. The garden elevation has a four-light casement window on the left bay, a door in front of the stack that creates a lobby entry plan, and a three-light casement window on the right or north bay, with a two-light window above. There is a left-hand dormer window. Inside, there is a moulded fireplace lintel on the first floor, and the interior features chamfered and stopped spine beams. A stack is located between the north bays, and to its south, a doubled timber-framed wall and roof truss indicate that the north bay was formerly a separate dwelling.
