Description
Woodrow High House is a small country house located in a park, dating from the early 18th century with later additions. It incorporates elements from an earlier house where Oliver Cromwell's wife and daughters are said to have stayed around 1630. The exterior is finished in painted stucco with slate roofs and parapets. The central block is three storeys high, flanked by single-storey wings added in the late 18th century, with the left-hand wing raised and extended in the early 19th century.
The house features full-height canted bays on either side of the centre, which has a half-glazed door with gothic glazing bars beneath a dentil cornice. There are bands at the first and second floors and a dentil cornice. The double-hung sash windows have a moulded string at head level. The right-hand wing also has a dentil cornice and two sash windows with architraves, along with a canted bay window on the right-hand return elevation. A two-storey rear wing mirrors the design of the right-hand wing. The left-hand wing matches the right but has a later upper storey and features a projecting porch with a round-arched entrance, cornice, and a wooden bell cupola topped with an ogee lead cap and a bell dated 1830.
Inside, the Dining Room boasts bolection moulded panelling, a wood cornice, and a fireplace with an overmantel. The Drawing Room features an Adam style chimneypiece and a moulded cornice, while the Lounge has a plaster modillion cornice. An early 19th-century staircase leads to the first floor, where the "Cromwell Room" includes bolection moulded panelling and an original fireplace with an overmantel. The room opposite contains a 18th-century carved wood fireplace with an oakleaf pulvinated frieze, along with other notable features.
