Description
Milton's Cottage is an early 17th-century timber-framed house featuring red brick infill and an old tile roof. It has a two-storey 18th-century wing that is set at right angles to the main structure. The building has leaded casement windows and three bays facing the street, with an original stack of old thin bricks located between the two left-hand bays. There is a lean-to on the left and a large projecting stack on the right. This cottage was lent to John Milton by his friend Thomas Ellwood in 1665, allowing Milton to escape from London during the plague year. It is here that he completed "Paradise Lost" and likely began "Paradise Regained," which was suggested to him by Ellwood. This is the only remaining house where Milton lived, and it now serves as a museum dedicated to him.
