Description
No. 20 Elm Street is a house, likely originally combined with a shop, dating from the early 19th century and altered in the 20th century. It features red brick in header bond, a hipped slate roof, and a brick end stack, forming an L-plan. The building is three stories high with a two-window range and is built with a quadrant curve at the corner of Elm Street and Well Street.
The entrance consists of a panelled, part-glazed door located at the center of the curve, which is approached by one stone step. Above the door is a blank overlight, and it is framed by a reeded wood surround with paterae blocks at the top angles and panelled reveals. Flanking the door are large-pane windows. The door and windows are set beneath a continuous narrow fascia with a roll-moulded cornice.
To the right on Elm Street, there is a six-panel door with an overlight, panelled reveals, and a reeded wood surround with paterae and a cornice hood. The ground and first floors feature twelve-pane sash windows with flat-arched heads, while the second floor has nine-pane sashes with similar heads. The building is set on a coursed squared limestone plinth and has boxed eaves.
