Description

Orchard Farmhouse and Orchard Cottage are a late 16th-century house, originally with stables, that have been altered and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings now function as two separate dwellings, forming an L-shaped layout with a projecting gable. The projecting bay has a jettied first floor to the front and right, supported by a moulded bressumer and incorporating a curved bracket to the corner and one shaped bracket. Leaded windows are present, including a three-light window to the ground floor and a canted oriel with moulded base and mullions to the first floor. A two-light casement is in the centre of the rear range, and a later three-light leaded casement is located in the 19th-century lean-to. The original left side was jettied, but now features a 19th-century lean-to. Brick infill is used, with a herringbone pattern in the projection and front wall of the rear wing. The roofs are tiled, and a central brick chimney is present. The left-hand bay is a 19th-century gabled brick projection with a horizontal sliding sash window to the ground floor, two 20th-century paired metal casements to the first floor, and a small attic window. The left side has 19th-century wooden casements and an entry. The right side has been rebuilt in brick with 20th-century leaded casements and a 20th-century lean-to porch connecting to the former stable block at the rear. A fire insurance plaque from the Royal Exchange is on the north-west corner of the jettied bay. Orchard Cottage, located to the right, retains an original staircase with a segmental door arch framing the landing.
