Description
The Bishopstone War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920 by the stonemasons Newman and Harper. It is made of Portland stone and stands on a bank, set on a paved rectangle that is accessed by four stone steps leading up from the village high street. The boundary of the monument is marked by four low posts linked with chain.
The memorial features a two-stepped base with concave tapering shoulders and a narrow collar on all sides. Rising from this base is a four-sided obelisk that is two meters tall and terminates in a pyramidal point. On the front face facing south-west, there is a carved wreath in relief above the inscription that reads: "ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BISHOPSTONE WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-19 1939-45." Beneath this inscription, the names of four men who were killed and three who were wounded in the First World War are carved in smaller letters.
The south-east face of the memorial is inscribed with the words "SERVED OVERSEAS," followed by the names of twenty men. On the north-east face, the inscription reads "HOME SERVICE," followed by the names of five individuals.
