Description

Nos. 1 and 2, The City, are a pair of houses dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, with some parts rebuilt in the 19th century. The section closest to the road is timber framed with brick infill, featuring a gable with rendered framing. The front has been partly rebuilt using thin brick and some 19th-century white brick. The old tile roof is half-hipped towards the road, and there is a chimney made of thin brick on the right side. The houses are two storeys high with two bays. The left bay includes paired barred wooden casements in the gable, a weatherboard lean-to, and a chimney at the front left, along with a 18th-century staircase projection made of red and vitreous brick, topped with a hipped roof and a small window. The right bay features paired barred wooden casements and a board door. At the rear, there is a brick outshot.

To the right is a lower range from the later 17th century, which retains some timber framing. The front has been rebuilt in the 19th century using red and white brick, with some flint. This section has an old tile roof and an off-centre chimney made of thin brick. It is one storey and has an attic, with two and a half bays. The ground floor has three paired barred wooden casements, and there is another casement in a gabled dormer to the left. A weatherboard shed is located to the right. Inside, the 16th to 17th-century part features diagonal braces, wind-braces, and a shaped rack over the fireplace.
