Description

Piggotts is a house that dates from the late 16th century, with parts rebuilt in the 18th century. It now serves as a cross wing to a mid to late 18th-century range, featuring a 17th-century staircase projection at the rear and extensions added around 1939 to the right. The original 16th-century building has a timber frame with thin brick infill in the rear gable, while the left side and front have been rebuilt in red and vitreous brick. The staircase projection is also timber-framed with thin brick infill. The 18th-century range to the right is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings, a partly gauged first-floor band course, and a flint plinth. The extensions are in matching brick. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles, with brick chimneys located between the left bays and to the right of the 18th-century range; the left chimney has a thin brick base. The house is L-shaped, with two storeys and three older bays. It features irregular 20th-century leaded casements in altered openings, and the centre bay has a 20th-century door with a flat wooden hood.

Inside, the 16th-century wing has ovolo moulded cross beams and an upper fireplace with a depressed arch made of chamfered brick. The original right wall of this wing retains some close-studding and an original nine-panelled door set in a stop-chamfered doorframe. There is a winder staircase with a newel post that has a carved square finial.
