Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Castle Yard are two houses dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are constructed from rubble with a graduated stone slate roof and stand two storeys high. The front features five first-floor windows beneath the eaves. There are two 20th-century board doors located between the left-hand windows and below the fourth first-floor window. The houses have sixteen-pane sash windows throughout, and all openings are framed with plain stone surrounds. There are chimney stacks at the left end and between the second and third windows. These cottages were possibly built or adapted around 1820 for workers at the nearby cotton mill, and they are included in the listing for their group value.
