Description
Embsay Kirk is a house built around 1780, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a stone slate roof. The building has a central staircase plan and presents a garden front that is three storeys high with five bays, including a canted central bay. The central entrance is highlighted by a portico supported by Doric engaged columns and features an open pediment with guttae on the soffit, French windows, and a round-headed fanlight. The ground floor has six windows, while the first and second floors each have seven windows, all with moulded surrounds and projecting sills, and are fitted with sash windows. The central window on the first floor includes an apron and dripstone. The eaves cornice is adorned with shaped modillions. The hipped roof has gable ends, with ridge stacks positioned to the left and right of the centre. To the left of the main house is a former billiard room from around 1870, which is a single-storey structure with one bay. Inside, the central staircase and a right-hand service stair were rearranged around 1830, featuring stone steps, an open string, and stick balusters. The house is located on the site of the former Augustinian Priory of Saint Cuthbert.
