Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed Chapel of Ease, founded in the 14th century and extensively rebuilt in 1663 for Lady Anne Clifford, as indicated by the renewed inscription over the porch door. The church underwent restorations in 1768, 1879, and 1909. It features coursed, squared rubble on a plinth, with buttresses on the north and west walls. The roof is covered with graduated slate and has stone copings and kneelers, along with a chimney and belfry at the west end. The building is a single cell with a south porch.
The south door, dating from the 17th century, has a semicircular head and continuous cavetto moulding. To the left of the porch is a small 2-light mullioned window, and to the right are three semicircular-headed windows from the 18th century. The north wall has two 3-light windows from the 17th century, while the east window was inserted in 1926. Inside, there is a panel with the Royal coat-of-arms dated 1663 in the chancel, a panelled polygonal pulpit with an adjustable reading stand from 1798, a small octagonal font with a moulded base and top from 1663, and a bread cupboard next to the south door for Middleton's Charity, dated 1784.
