Description

Gate Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and has been altered over time. It is constructed of roughly coursed slobbered rubble with quoins and some through-stones, topped with a graduated Cumbrian slate roof. The building has a single-depth, two-unit plan oriented on an east-west axis, facing south, with an additional third unit at the eastern end.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and features three windows arranged in a grouped pattern of two on the left and one on the right, not including a stair-window situated between them. There is a gabled porch offset to the left of centre, which includes a square-headed outer doorway with a monolithic lintel and side benches. To the left of the porch, there is a stone-slate drip-course above the ground floor, along with two rectangular windows on each floor, all fitted with 20th-century glazing and stone lintels. To the right of the porch, there is a rectangular stair-window, followed by one rectangular window on each floor, slightly offset, which also have 20th-century glazing.

The left gable features through-stones on two levels and a corbelled square chimney with a stone slate band, while a ridge chimney is located to the right of the second bay. The rear of the building has not been inspected. Although the interior has not been examined, the outer openings indicate that the housepart is to the left, and the position of the stair-window suggests an unusual plan.
