Description

SEDBERGH

SD69NW HOWGILL LANE, Howgill 162-1/1/358 (West side (off)) Gate Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Probably late C17 or early C18; altered. Roughly coursed slobbered rubble with quoins and some through-stones, graduated Cumbrian slate roof. Single-depth 2-unit plan on east-west axis facing south, plus a 3rd unit at the east end. 2 storeys and 3 windows (grouped 2:1, not including a stair-window between). Offset left of centre is a gabled porch which has a square-headed outer doorway with a monolithic lintel and side benches; to the left of the porch is a stone-slate drip-course over the ground floor, and 2 rectangular windows on each floor, all with C20 glazing and stone lintels. To the right of the porch is a rectangular stair-window, and further right one rectangular window on each floor (slightly offset), all these also with C20 glazing. The left gable has through-stones on 2 levels, and a corbelled square chimney with a stone slate band; and there is a ridge chimney to the right of the 2nd bay. Rear not inspected. INTERIOR not inspected, but the outer openings show that the housepart is to the left, and the position of the stair-window suggest an unusual plan.
