Description
The Church of St. Oswald is a Grade II listed building located in Arncliffe. The west tower dates back to the 15th century, while the nave was rebuilt around 1800 and restored in 1841, with further work on the chancel completed in 1843 by Anthony Salvin. The tower is constructed of limestone rubble, and the nave and chancel are made of coursed rubble with a grey slate roof.
The church features a west tower, a three-bay nave with a north aisle and a south porch, and a lower two-bay chancel. The tower has two stages with offset diagonal buttresses, a three-light restored perpendicular west window, and a clock on the south side. The belfry windows consist of two trefoil-headed lights beneath a continuous hoodmould, and the tower is topped with a restored embattled parapet featuring crocketed corner finials.
The body of the church includes offset buttresses, two-light perpendicular style windows, a low porch with a four-centred archway, and a three-light east window. Inside, the tower arch is supported by attached octagonal columns and features a pointed arch of two orders, one concave and one straight. Blocked windows, likely from the early 1800s construction, can be seen on the north and south walls of the nave. The chancel has a very wide depressed pointed arch, and the nave roof is supported by six queen-post trusses with cusped decoration. The east window glass was created by Wailes of Newcastle.
