Description
The peat store of the smelting mill is a disused structure from the early 19th century, built from limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. It is a single-storey building featuring four bays of round-headed archways, of which the second is open while the others are wholly or partly blocked. The rear elevation has four slits that may have been part-blocked former peat chutes. There is a small window on the left end and a blocked round-arched opening on the right end. Peat was the fuel used in the lead smelting mill, with a year's supply taken from the moor, dried, and stored near the mill for use. This peat store is the best preserved of any lead-smelting mill complex in Swaledale and Wensleydale and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
