Description
The flue of Grinton Smelting Mill, dating from around 1820, is a significant remnant of industrial architecture. Constructed from rubble, it features a barrel-vaulted design that is parabolic in section. The flue originally extended from the north side of the Grinton Smelting Mill, running behind the peat store and ascending the hillside to the east for 300 metres, gaining an elevation of 350 metres, where it ended in a square chimney that has since completely collapsed. The structure has suffered some collapse in various sections. It is scheduled as an Ancient Monument and is included partly for its group value.
