Description

Salisbury House and railings consist of two houses, now combined into one, located on the south side of Main Street in Askrigg. The house on the left dates from the early 19th century, while the house on the right is dated 1818. Both buildings are constructed from coursed rubble with stone slate roofs.

The left house is three storeys tall with three bays. It features a central six-panel door beneath a three-pane overlight, all set in an ashlar surround with splayed bases, a basket-arched soffit to the lintel, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice. The windows are sash style with deep ashlar sills and sill-like lintels, and there are square gutter brackets. An end stack is located to the right. The rear elevation has a round-arched landing window in an ashlar surround, complete with imposts, a keystone, and decorative glazing bars. The right return has a fluted lead rainwater head.

The right house is two storeys high with two first-floor windows. It has a central studded board door in a plain ashlar surround, and above it is a panel inscribed "J L 1818". To the right, there are board doors beneath a segmental arch made of rubble voussoirs with a hoodmould. The windows are also sash style with glazing bars, ashlar sills, and sill-like lintels, along with square gutter brackets. There is a rear external stack, and above it is a studded board pitching door in a plain ashlar surround.

In front of the main door of the right house, there are wrought-iron railings leading up the steps. Both houses are flanked by an ashlar plinth with cast-iron railings featuring spear finials and crown finials on the standards.
