Description
The Smithy, located about 10 yards southeast of The Forge house, is a building that dates back to around 1844. At the time of the survey in 1985, it was being used for storage. The east elevation features a window lintel that bears the date 1844, along with the initials C.B. (for Christopher Bowman) and tools of the blacksmith's trade, all carved in low relief. Above this, there is a contemporary bas-relief depicting a blacksmith shoeing a horse. The structure is built from slobbered rubble with quoins and has graduated slate roofs. It is a single-storey building with two bays and small outbuildings attached to the north. The main entrance is on the east elevation, and it has fixed windows with glazing bars. Although little of the forge remains inside, a chimney on the south gable has been preserved.
The Smithy is listed primarily due to the large number and variety of decoratively carved stones embedded in the walls, many of which feature inscriptions and scenes of local life. These were created by Christopher Bowman, the village blacksmith, who was also a well-known local poet.
