Description
St Peter's House is an 18th-century building located on the west side of Old Market. It features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, constructed of red brick with a parapet and plinth. The central section of the building projects forward and is topped with a pediment. It has a wood ogee bracket cornice and a pantile roof. The facade includes a 2:3:2 arrangement of sash windows with flush frames and flat arches. To the left of the center, there is a six-panel door set in a wooden case, flanked by pilasters and an entablature.
Inside, the house boasts a good interior with some panelling. At the rear, there is a building designed in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style, featuring a stucco exterior. This building retains much of its original style, including fragments of early stained glass. St Peter's House is situated on the site of the former St Peter's Church, which was demolished in the mid-16th century. It is possible that the stained glass fragments originated from that church or from St Mary's Church in Beccles, which was demolished later in the same century.
The four sides of the Old Market contribute to its overall character, and the location is significant as it is near the center of the town.
