Description
The Old Granary is a wherry granary, later converted into a private house, dated 1808 and restored in 1977 by Anthony C. Adcock. It is constructed of brick with a pantile roof. The north-east gable features a three-storey facade, symmetrical in design. A central round-arched, panelled door, within a square surround and approached by a short flight of steps, provides access. To the left and right of this door are single, segmental three-light windows, the central light being louvred. A central access door to the granary is located on the first floor, now half-glazed. Above, there are two windows similar to those on the ground floor. A loading door in the attic, is also now half-glazed. The roof is gabled, and the rear gable is weatherboarded. A staithe runs underneath the building, creating wherry bays, with the floor beams supported by arched braces. The rear facade shows a three-storey, symmetrical arrangement. The ground floor has a central glazed door from the 20th century, flanked by single leaded casements. The first floor has two tiers of leaded casements: the lower tier is two-light, and the upper tier is four-light. A four-light attic casement, also with leaded lights, completes the rear elevation. Inside, many original features remain, including bridging beams, joists, and timbering. The granary bays retain plank walls. All casements are of the original iron design. The roof structure consists of tie beams, one tier of clasped purlins, and collars. This is an excellent example of a rare industrial building.
