Description
New Barn is a barn and stabling structure located on Falmer Road in Rottingdean, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is built from flint with red brick dressings and features a tiled roof. The building has an L-shaped layout and appears to have three distinct construction phases.
The northern section of the barn is likely an 18th-century, five-bay barn with opposing cart entries. The eastern entry is full-height but now blocked, and there are blocked triangular vents along with some inserted openings. The original roof structure includes trusses with raking queen posts supporting clasped purlins, along with principal and common rafters, some of which have been replaced, and straight wind braces.
To the south, there is a three-bay addition, probably built in the early 19th century, which features a blocked loading hatch and a rebuilt cart entry. Additionally, there is a lower range of stables extending west from the north end, likely constructed in the 19th century. The roof is hipped, with a gablet on the southern side.
