Description

Northgate Cottages comprises a terrace of three 18th-century houses with a later addition of 1881. The cottages are numbers 1-4, located on Falmer Road in Rottingdean. The exterior of numbers 1-3 features cobbles with yellow brick dressings, while number 4 is distinguished by red brick dressings. Quoins are of red brick.

The entrances to numbers 1 and 3 are accessed through a late 20th-century rear extension. Entrances to numbers 2 and 3 are paired under a segmental archway constructed of yellow brick, and the entrance to number 4 is at the north end of numbers 1-3, with a recently rebuilt segmental arch in red brick. The base of numbers 1-3 is rendered, and they have segmental-arched ground-floor windows with yellow brick dressings (except for the rebuilt head of number 1, which uses red brick). Number 4 has a red brick sill band to the first floor and a plaque inscribed "S&GHB 1881".

Most of the ground-floor windows on numbers 1-3 and the first-floor windows on number 4 contain horizontal sliding sashes. A central ridge stack is located on number 4, and the cottages have rendered returns. The interior remains uninspected.
